Farm Shares & Private Garden Programs

Farm Shares (CSA)

What is farm share or CSA?

A Farm Share—also called Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)—is a mutually supportive partnership between community members and local farmers. Members pay in advance for a share of the upcoming harvest, helping the farm cover its pre-season costs (seeds, soil amendments, labor, etc.). In return, the farmer provides weekly shares of fresh, naturally grown produce throughout the season.

At Princeton Farms & Preserves, our CSA is set up in a market style. Each week’s harvest is displayed at the farm, and members select from what’s available (within certain guidelines), customizing their share to match their preferences.

Our Growing Practices
  • We exceed USDA organic standards in our growing methods (though not officially certified).
  • No synthetic herbicides or pesticides are used.
  • We rely on crop rotation, cover crops, healthy soil practices, and beneficial insects to keep plants thriving.
  • This ensures you receive safe, clean, and responsibly grown produce.

  • The season typically starts in early June and continues through early October (16–17 weeks).
  • We’ll announce the exact start date in spring, based on weather and crop progress.
Reusable Jute Bags
  • You receive two reusable jute bags at the start.
  • Please bring one each week. If forgotten, you can purchase an extra at the farm.
Variety & Quantities
  • Expect 7–9 types of produce each week, though availability depends on weather and other factors.
  • We grow a wide array of items, including nearly 20 varieties of peppers and multiple tomato varieties—some are produced in smaller, specialty batches.
  • Staple crops are usually plentiful; rarer items may be given in predetermined portions so everyone has a chance to enjoy them.
not All Planned Items Will Succeed
  • Farming can be unpredictable—some crops may yield less or fail altogether due to weather, pests, or disease.
  • When possible, we’ll supplement shares with items from neighboring farms that share our naturally grown philosophy.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CSA right for my household?

A CSA is perfect for anyone who values local, seasonal eating. You’ll receive fresh produce each week, learn to cook with the seasons, and explore new flavors. However, be prepared for some unpredictability—crop yields vary year to year.

What if I dislike certain vegetables or herbs?

Our “market style” approach lets you make some choices. You can usually skip items you don’t enjoy (within reason), but we encourage trying new things—it’s part of the CSA adventure!

Can I share a CSA with someone else?

Absolutely. You can split a share with a friend, neighbor, or family member. Just decide who will be the primary contact person for payment and pickup logistics.

What happens if I miss my pickup day?

If you can’t come, a friend or relative can pick up your share. If you let us know in advance, we can donate your share that week to a local food pantry or charity.

Is there a risk to joining a CSA?

Yes. Farming is weather-dependent, and some crops may fail. By joining, you share in the rewards (bountiful harvests) and risks (occasional crop losses) that come with farming. We work hard to mitigate these risks using sustainable practices.

How many items do I get each week?

Typically, 7–9 different types of produce are available. Quantities vary by item and season. Some items, especially rare or specialty varieties, may have set limits so all members can sample them.

Do you use any synthetic chemicals at all?

No. We use only natural growing methods—no synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. We meet or exceed USDA organic standards, though we are not officially certified.

When does the season start and end?

We aim to begin in early June and continue into early October—a span of 16 to 17 weeks. Exact timing depends on spring weather and crop development.

Can I request specific items in my share?

While we can’t guarantee specific requests (due to weather and yield variability), our market-style pickup gives you the chance to select items from what’s harvested each week.

Is my payment refundable if I change my mind?

Once the season begins, we cannot offer refunds. Your payment covers critical early-season costs (seeds, soil, labor) to ensure the crops grow. CSA membership is a commitment both ways.
